We’ve stayed just about every way you can during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We’ve rented a house in Spearfish with friends and family, stayed in a toy hauler farther into the Black Hills, camped in a fifth wheel at a biker campground near Sturgis, stayed at a motel right in downtown Sturgis, and stayed at a chain hotel in Rapid City.

In 2027, we’re adding another experience to the list when we stay in our RV at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

What we’ve learned is that where you stay can completely change your Sturgis experience. Staying farther away might give you peace and quiet, but that also means riding back after dark when it’s cold and wildlife is on the road. Staying close to the action might mean more noise, but you can enjoy the nighttime entertainment without worrying about a long ride back.

There really isn’t one “best” place to stay for Sturgis. It depends on how you want to experience the rally. Here’s what we’ve learned from the places we’ve stayed and what we’d consider before choosing where to stay.

Where to Stay for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Depends on Your Trip

Before you start looking at hotels and campgrounds, think about what you actually want to do during the rally.

If being downtown, walking through the vendors and staying out late is important to you, staying in or close to Sturgis might be worth paying more for. If concerts and nighttime entertainment are a big part of your plans, one of the biker campgrounds with its own entertainment might make more sense.

Traveling with friends or family? A house or vacation rental can give everyone more room and a place to hang out together. If you just want a clean, quiet room and don’t mind riding into Sturgis, hotels in places like Rapid City or Spearfish give you more options.

And if your trip is more about riding the Black Hills than staying out late at the rally, staying farther away might be exactly what you want.

We’ve done Sturgis several different ways, and one of the biggest things we’ve learned is not to choose where you’re staying based on price and distance alone. Think about what you’re going to be doing at 10 o’clock at night, too.

Staying Right in Downtown Sturgis

If being close to Main Street, vendors, restaurants, and everything happening downtown is important to you, staying right in Sturgis is hard to beat.

We’ve stayed at The Sturgis Motel, right in downtown Sturgis. You might think staying downtown during the rally would mean listening to motorcycles all night, but the traffic noise wasn’t nearly as bad as we expected.

One of the things we enjoyed most was the atmosphere. The owner was great, provided a breakfast buffet in the morning, and it became a place where we could hang out before heading out for the day and again when we came back at night.

The biggest advantage for us was simply being there. You can enjoy downtown Sturgis and the nighttime activities without ending every night with a long, cold ride back through the Black Hills.

If experiencing downtown is a big part of what you want from your Sturgis trip, we’d absolutely consider staying right in Sturgis.

Staying at a Biker Campground Near Sturgis

Another option is staying at one of the campgrounds that caters specifically to riders during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We’ve stayed at Shade Valley Camp Resort in a fifth wheel with friends, and the location was one of the things we liked most about it.

It was close enough to downtown Sturgis that we didn’t feel like we were making a major trip every time we wanted to head into town. The camping area was also flat, which became something we appreciated a whole lot more after some of our other camping experiences.

Shade Valley had its own entertainment and bands scheduled at night, so we didn’t necessarily have to leave the campground to have something to do. When we stayed there, though, it was surprisingly quiet and there weren’t nearly as many people attending the entertainment as we expected.

And despite the name, don’t automatically assume you’re parking under a giant shade tree. There wasn’t a whole lot of shade where we were. 😂

That’s something worth researching when choosing any biker campground around Sturgis. Some are known for being party destinations while others are much quieter. Don’t just look at how many miles the campground is from Sturgis. Look at the atmosphere, entertainment, campground layout and amenities to make sure it fits the kind of rally experience you want.

Staying at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip

We’ve spent plenty of time at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip over the years, but believe it or not, we’ve never actually stayed there. That’s changing in 2027 when we plan to bring our RV and experience the Chip as campers for the first time.

We already know the Buffalo Chip is one of the places to be if you want entertainment to be a big part of your Sturgis experience. There are concerts, events, bike shows, rides and plenty happening throughout the campground. We’re looking forward to being able to enjoy everything going on at night without having to get back on the motorcycles and make a cold, dark ride somewhere else afterward.

Our challenge will be finding the right RV spot for us. We know the Buffalo Chip has a reputation as a party campground, and we’ve seen that side of it firsthand. We want to be part of everything happening there while hopefully finding an RV area where we can get a little quiet when we’re ready to call it a night.

For 2027, the Buffalo Chip offers several ways to stay, including tent camping, general and reserved RV camping, cabins, RV rentals and other upgraded camping options. Pay attention to what’s included when making reservations. RV camping and other upgrades require a Rally admission pass for each person staying at the site.

We got to see much more than what you see when you just come in for a concert or event, including the different camping areas and just how big the Buffalo Chip really is.

Staying Farther Away in the Black Hills

Staying farther away from Sturgis can sound like a great idea, especially if riding the Black Hills is a big part of your trip. We’ve done it, staying in a toy hauler with friends at the Custer Crazy Horse Campground in the Custer and Crazy Horse area.

During the day, being farther into the Black Hills wasn’t the problem. It was getting back at night that changed our opinion.

South Dakota weather during the rally can be unpredictable, and temperatures can drop once the sun goes down. Add dark roads and the possibility of large animals in the road, and that ride back feels very different at night than it does during the day. We also wanted to stay in Sturgis for the bands and nighttime entertainment, which meant either leaving earlier than we wanted or making that ride back late.

Then it rained. Our campsite was on a hill, the ground got muddy, and that added another lesson to the list.

Would we tell someone not to stay farther out? Absolutely not. If your priority is riding the Black Hills, enjoying quieter evenings and getting away from the rally crowds at night, it could be perfect. But if you plan on spending your evenings in downtown Sturgis or at concerts and events, think about that nighttime ride before choosing a campground based only on how beautiful it looks during the day.

For the way we like to experience the rally, we’ve learned that we prefer staying closer to Sturgis.
Your Sturgis 2025 lodging choice shapes your entire rally experience. Do you want 24/7 action or a quiet retreat? Staying at major venues like the Sturgis Buffalo Chip or Full Throttle Saloon means you’re not just booking a room, but a complete lifestyle experience.

These venues become self-contained cities with their own entertainment and dining. The convenience is a huge draw: roll out of your tent or cabin and you’re at the party, with no travel or parking hassles. On-site concerts and a non-stop party atmosphere are the main attractions. While this is a dream for some, it might be overwhelming if you need quiet time to recharge. All-inclusive packages can offer good value by bundling lodging, food, and entertainment.

Staying in Spearfish During the Sturgis Rally

We’ve also stayed in an Airbnb in Spearfish with friends and family, and for that particular trip it checked all the boxes.

Having a house gave us room to stay together, hang out when we weren’t riding, and have more of a home base than you get with a traditional hotel room. For a group of friends or family traveling to Sturgis together, a vacation rental is definitely an option we’d consider again.

Spearfish also kept us close enough to Sturgis that we didn’t feel disconnected from the rally. After experiencing what it’s like to stay much farther into the Black Hills, we’ve learned there is a big difference between getting away from downtown and getting too far away for the way we like to enjoy Sturgis.

Staying in Rapid City During the Sturgis Rally

We’ve stayed at a Holiday Inn in Rapid City, which gave us a completely different experience. Sometimes there’s something to be said for booking a familiar chain hotel and knowing pretty much what you’re going to get.

It was quiet, comfortable, and the location worked well for getting to Sturgis as well as other places we wanted to visit around the Black Hills. The hotel also accommodated the motorcycle crowd and even provided an area where riders could wash down their bikes, which was a nice touch during rally week.

Rapid City does put you farther away from downtown Sturgis, so we’d factor that into our plans if nighttime entertainment was a priority. But if you want a traditional hotel, access to everything a larger city offers, and don’t mind riding back and forth, Rapid City can make a good home base.

What Motorcycle Riders Should Think About Before Booking

Where you’re sleeping is only part of the decision when you’re riding to and around Sturgis. Before booking, think about what getting back to that hotel, rental or campground is going to look like at the end of your day.

How far will you have to ride after dark? Are you planning to stay downtown for the evening or watch concerts late into the night? South Dakota weather can change quickly, nights can get cold, and wildlife on the roads is something you need to take seriously.

If you’re camping, look beyond the pictures of the campground. Is your site flat? Is it grass, gravel or dirt? What happens if it rains? Are there showers and bathrooms nearby? If you’re bringing an RV or trailer, make sure there’s enough room for everything you’re bringing and check what hookups are actually included.

Hotel riders have different things to consider. Ask about motorcycle parking, trailer parking if you need it, and whether there’s somewhere to deal with wet riding gear. We especially appreciated finding a hotel that provided an area for riders to wash their motorcycles.

Most importantly, think about how you plan to experience Sturgis. A place that looks perfect at 10 AM might not feel nearly as perfect when you’re heading back there at 11 PM.

Do You Really Need to Book Sturgis Lodging a Year Ahead?

You’ll hear people say you have to book your Sturgis lodging a year in advance. That hasn’t been our experience.

We’ve been able to find places to stay during the rally, including right in downtown Sturgis. That doesn’t mean we’d recommend waiting until the last minute if you already know where you want to stay.

If you have your heart set on a particular campground, hotel, cabin, rental or specific type of RV site, book it as soon as you know you’re going. The most popular choices and specific sites can fill up.

But if you’re flexible about where you stay, don’t assume you can’t go to Sturgis just because you didn’t make a reservation a year ago. There are lodging and camping options throughout Sturgis and the surrounding Black Hills communities.

As for rally prices, we look at Sturgis like any other major event. Go to a big football game, concert or festival and lodging in that city is probably going to cost more while everyone is there. Sturgis is no different. Know your budget, compare your options, and decide what being closer to the rally is worth to you.

Where is the best place to stay for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally?

There isn’t one best place to stay for everyone. If you want to spend a lot of time downtown or enjoy nighttime entertainment, we’d stay in or close to Sturgis. If you want quieter evenings or plan to spend most of your time riding the Black Hills, staying farther away may work better for you.

Is it better to stay in Sturgis or Rapid City?

We prefer being closer to Sturgis because we like experiencing the rally at night without having a longer ride back afterward. Rapid City can be a good choice if you prefer a traditional hotel, want access to the conveniences of a larger city, and don’t mind riding back and forth.

Should I stay at the Buffalo Chip?

If concerts, entertainment and being right in the middle of the rally atmosphere are important to you, the Buffalo Chip is certainly worth considering. It is known as a party campground, though, so don’t book it expecting a quiet little campground in the woods. We’ve visited and toured the property many times, but 2027 will be our first time actually staying there in our RV. We’ll update this guide afterward with what we learned.

Is camping or a hotel better for Sturgis?

We’ve done both, and each gives you a different Sturgis experience. Camping can put you closer to other riders, campground entertainment and the rally atmosphere. A hotel gives you a real bed, private bathroom, air conditioning and a predictable place to come back to every night. We’d choose based on the experience you want, not because one option is automatically better than the other.
