Main Street was packed, and as we rode through the smaller towns around the Black Hills, motorcycles were already lined up along the streets. Where we did notice a difference was out on the roads. There weren't as many motorcycles as we saw during the 85th Anniversary Rally in 2025. But comparing 2026 to the other non-anniversary years we've attended since 2021, the amount of motorcycle traffic felt pretty normal to us. That's an important distinction when looking at the final attendance numbers. Yes, SDDOT's vehicle count was lower than 2025 and below the previous five-year average. From what we personally experienced, though, that didn't translate into an empty Main Street or an empty Black Hills. The numbers tell one part of the Sturgis story. Being there tells another.

Weather can change plans quickly. Anyone who has spent time riding in the Black Hills knows how unpredictable the weather can be during the rally. Heat, cold, rain and severe weather can affect when riders arrive, where they ride and how long they stay. Travel costs and the economy matter too. Sturgis isn't a weekend trip for many riders. Fuel, lodging, camping, food and the cost of taking time away from work can all influence whether someone makes the trip in a particular year. The calendar can affect the numbers. Riders arrive before the official rally begins and some stay afterward. We saw this ourselves in 2026 when Sturgis already felt extremely busy on the Thursday before the official start of the rally. And then there are unusual years. The 2020 rally took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and still recorded substantial vehicle traffic, showing just how difficult it can be to predict Sturgis based on any one factor.
