Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Tips

Pennsylvania is a beautiful state to see on a motorcycle. The rolling mountains and vast forests make for some breathtaking views on the road. But riding in Pennsylvania comes with some unique challenges when it comes to weather, nature, and road conditions. Following these five safety tips can help you navigate the state with ease and make it home safely.

5 Tips for Motorcycle Safety in Pennsylvania

1. Wear a helmet. Always.
You had to know this would be number one on the list. You’ve probably heard the statistics hundreds of times, and for good reason. Riders in an accident who are wearing a helmet have a significantly higher chance of survival than those who are not. Helmets reduce the risk of severe brain injury by 70%. Wear a properly fitted helmet, protective eyewear, and clothing with adequate coverage and protection. Every time.

2. Watch for potholes.
If you’re born and raised in PA, this one is probably a no-brainer. Pennsylvania is known for having some of the worst potholes in the country. Hitting a bad pothole in an automobile can mean a  scratch or dent, maybe a visit to your mechanic. Hitting a bad pothole on a motorcycle can lead to some serious injuries. It is so important to keep an eye out for potholes, especially on back roads. Adjust your speed accordingly and always keep your eyes on the road.

3. Watch for deer (and other critters).
Pennsylvania’s beautiful forest landscapes are home to some very active wildlife. Deer are some of the most dangerous animals in the country, causing 5,849 accidents last year in Pennsylvania alone. Deer are particularly dangerous to motorcycle riders due to the lack of barrier between rider and animal. This also applies to smaller animals like skunks, squirrels, raccoons, and porcupines. If you are riding in PA, especially at night when these animals are more active, be sure to stay alert and control your speed so you are able to stop safely to avoid an animal collision.

4. Don’t risk the ride in rough weather.
Pennsylvania weather can sometimes be unpredictable. From heavy rains to snow and ice to extreme heat, we get a little bit of everything here. Check weather forecasts before you head out to make sure the conditions are safe. Heavy rains can cause a loss of control and result in accidents. Extreme heat can be dangerous for riders with risks such as sun poisoning, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. You might think you’re safe from snow and icy conditions by staying off the roads in the winter months, but remember that in Pennsylvania, “winter” conditions can sometimes start as early as October and end as late as March. Check the weather before you take off to make sure it’s safe to ride.

5. Use caution in construction zones.
Construction in PA can sometimes seem never ending. Stay safe on a motorcycle in construction by keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Be alert and aware of changing road conditions, especially rough roads and metal plates. Slower traffic is a cause of frustration for everyone in construction zones. We know it is tempting to weave in and out of the slow-moving traffic. Seeing a space you know your bike can fit through can be very enticing. But keep in mind that in the state of Pennsylvania, lane splitting is illegal and can result in citations, fines, or other unwanted legal consequences.

Keeping these tips in mind can help you stay safe when riding in Pennsylvania. This state is full of breathtaking natural beauty that is best seen from the open road. Ride safe and enjoy.
